A welcome to the Sequoyah website from club
president Reginald Griggs. One need only visit and play Sequoyah to
appreciate the unrivaled beauty and relaxing solitude so rare to
find in any metropolis.

|
 | |
As one of the oldest and most venerated golf courses in Northern
California, Sequoyah has a rich and storied history. See how the golf course has evolved at the Course History page. The Oakland Open was played at Sequoyah in the late 30's
and early 40's, with professionals such as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan,
Byron Nelson and Jimmy Demaret adding to the local lore.

|
 | |
The golf course at Sequoyah is as difficult to master as it is verdant and beautiful, with hilly terrain and
small, sloping greens to challenge the most skilled golfer. With no parallel fairways and no two holes alike, Sequoyah is
truly a joy to experience.

|
 | | The glorious Sequoyah clubhouse, with
its high beam ceilings and antique charm, provides an aura of grand
elegance for club members and guests. Exquisite dining is offered,
prepared by culinary experts and served by an attentive staff.
Banquets, weddings and other social and special events are
held in a number of private rooms or the large Terrace Room with a
capacity for 300 guests.
|
 | |
Tournaments are held throughout the playing year, including
the men's and women's Invitational and Open tournaments, senior home
and away events, member guest events, junior events, etc. Add
swimming and tennis and Sequoyah presents a complete recreational
package.

|
 | |
Guests from other clubs
are always welcome at Sequoyah, with green fees among the
lowest of any private club in the Bay Area. For those interested, proprietary, social
and young executive membership are often available due to retiring or otherwise transitory members.
'Chief' Sequoyah | "Chief" Sequoyah is credited with inventing the syllabary or written language of the Cherokee Nation. Born in 1770, Sequoyah was a skilled silversmith before serving as a soldier in the War of 1812. He was always fascinated with the white people's ability to communicate by making marks on paper, and so, beginning in 1809, he set out to devise a written language for his people. Within several months of Sequoyah’s unveiling of his symbolic system, a substantial number of people in the Cherokee Nation reportedly were able to read and write in their own language. His is the only known instance of an individual creating a totally new system of writing. |
