Club History

Over a century ago, a who’s-who of prominent Oakland citizens gathered at San Francisco's St. Francis Hotel to establish what would become one of Northern California's most beautiful and challenging private golf clubs, the Sequoyah Country Club.

Following its organization in 1913, the first clubhouse, designed by architect Edward G. Garden, was completed in 1915. Initially, the plans included space for a polo field and racetrack, but the focal point of the property was the 6,100-yard golf course. Notably, the course was unique for its time as there were no public roads interrupting its layout.

A clubhouse renovation in 1928 introduced more modern amenities. By the 1930s, Sequoyah Country Club had become synonymous with elegance and sophistication, hosting regular social functions such as a formal, black-tie dinner on the last Sunday of every month. Women's golf became a staple activity at the Club, which also hosted premier tournaments featuring renowned players like Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jimmy Demaret, and Byron Nelson.

WWII significantly impacted life in America, and Sequoyah Country Club was no exception. Membership dwindled to a record low of 90, leading to cost-cutting measures such as reducing staff to a single couple who lived on-site and performed all tasks from cooking and bartending to housekeeping and security.

Following the war, Sequoyah Country Club experienced a resurgence and continued to attract visitors to its picturesque setting, vibrant membership, and outstanding course. PGA pro Don Whitt set the course record in 1955 before his professional days when he served as the club's first assistant golf professional.

For the past 70 years, Sequoyah Country Club has remained a haven where families can gather, play, relax, compete, or simply enjoy each other's company. Throughout the year, we serve as a premier destination for weddings, formal affairs, and fine dining. Just as we have for over a century, we offer stunning vistas and one of the most challenging golf courses in America.
